Middle-aged people can make themselves look years younger by pulling faces, according to new research.

A regular 30-minute facial exercise programme, known as face yoga, reduced the average age of a group of participants by three years after a 20-week trial.

During the trial, experts were asked to guess the ages of the participants before and after they completed the exercise programme. The estimated age dropped from 50.8 to 48.1 years.

Murad Alam, of the dermatology department at Northwestern University, Chicago, said: “The exercises enlarge and strengthen the facial muscles, so the face becomes firmer and more toned and shaped like a younger face.” (http://www.feinberg.northwestern.edu/faculty-profiles/az/profile.html?xid=10210)

Face yoga has been developed by Annelise Hagen, a yoga teacher in New York. The participants in the trial, who were aged from 40 to 65, learnt 32 exercises. They took part in two sets of 90-minute training sessions and then followed a programme at home.

In one exercise participants smiled without showing their teeth, pursed their lips together, placed their fingers on the corners of their mouth and then slid them up to the top of the cheeks, holding for 20 seconds.

“Assuming the findings are confirmed in a larger study, individuals now have a low-cost, non-toxic way for looking younger or to augment other cosmetic or anti-ageing treatments,” Professor Alam said."...
